This Chinese miniature tabletop screen brings together small figurative scenes in a composition that rewards a closer look. Pale medallions stand out against the dark wood, making its silhouette a focal point on a console or shelf.

Why we chose this miniature screen

We like the way it brings the presence of a folding screen to the scale of a decorative object. Its chinoiserie decoration introduces figures and landscapes in a piece that can be opened at a slight angle to add depth behind a low object. The drawings provide a narrative detail alongside plain surfaces, unadorned ceramics and linen textiles.

In a contemporary interior, the contrast between the wood and the pale backgrounds enriches a simple arrangement. It works as a small backdrop on a console, or as the focal piece on an uncluttered shelf.
